Provisions

Clarendon School is a day special school for 140 pupils aged 4-16yrs with learning difficulties (usually within the moderate range) and additional complex needs. The school is part of the continuum created to meet special educational needs within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The ethos of the school reflects the importance that we place on academic, social and emotional development.

Our emphasis is on developing individual potential whilst fostering caring and positive attitudes. Students participate in a full range of academic and social activities, and follow all the subjects of the National Curriculum. Clubs to suit all interests are organised after school at the Secondary Centre.

We have a team of staff that provide additional therapy sessions: speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, behaviour support, music therapy, counselling, art therapy and family therapy, all of which contribute towards individual student development

Gateway

The Gateway Centre aims to offer its students an individual curriculum, with access to the breadth of subjects, both within the adjacent mainstream school and with the centre. In addition, the Gateway Centre addresses student’s needs arising from both their autism and any additional learning needs. This allows our students to experience all aspects of school life, whilst fulfilling their academic potential.

The philosophy of The Gateway Centre is to prepare our students for a life in which they are able to participate in and contribute to society, living as independently as possible, with meaningful employment and relationships.

We believe that the first step in this process is inclusion in mainstream school life and that this can be achieved by educating the school community about the strengths and difficulties of our students and by helping our students develop social skills, relationships and strategies which build confidence and resilience.  We work with the mainstream school staff, delivering in-service training, leading assemblies and working at an individual level to ensure a personalised understanding of our student needs.  This is all supported by working individually with our young people to help them develop social skills and self-awareness through group and one to one sessions.  We are constantly looking to add to what we provide to increase the effectiveness of our practices.
